Gatlinburg: Great Smokey Mountain History

Gatlinburg: The most visited of all of America's national parks is Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), located half within Tennessee and the other half within North Carolina cabins. Visitors come to try the hundreds of adventures and attractions, sample the great food, view the mountain vistas, trees, flowers, streams, and waterfalls. Smoky Mountain cabin rentals such as Gatlinburg cabin rentals and Pigeon Forge Cabins are perfect for basing your vacation. Many of the views from these cabins overlook part of the park. The GSMNP has the highest mountains in the eastern part of United States, and some of the largest sections of virgin forest which have been preserved in the east.

The area currently enclosed in the park was once the land of the Cherokee Indians who arrived in the area in year 1000. During the late 1700's settlers moved into the area and built log cabins. During the next years, these settlers and their families established farms, small towns, and were generally self-sufficient and stable. There were at least 6,000 small farms in existence within the area of the park during the early 1900’s. Remnants of the lives of these people can be seen in many areas of the park, including Cades Cove and the North Carolina Oconoluftee Area.

One of the first people to advocate for the establishment of a national park in the Smokies was W.P. Davis of Knoxville. He and his wife made a tour of western national parks, and as the story goes asked Mrs. Davis asked her husband why there couldn't be a national park in the Great Smokies. She was not the only one with that idea. Horace Kephart, who was one of the first to recognize the potential of conserving the natural characteristics of the Smokies, wanted that as well. Kephart came to live in the Smokies in 1904 to escape personal problems, seeking out wilderness and to enjoy a quiet life. He found mountains there, and wilderness and other natural areas. In1923 a group in Knoxville, the Great Smoky Mountain Conservation Association, led by Colonel David Chapman and joined by North Carolina supporters, was formed to promote the idea of a national park in the TN and NC Smokies. The work of photographer James E. Thompson, whose images allowed many to share the beauty of the Smokey Mountains, also contributed to the success of the national park concept.

Because of the successes of all of these individuals--from both east Tennessee and western North Carolina, the park was finally and fully authorized in 1934. The park was immediately successful, and in 1941 set a record for one year visitation of a national park of one million. It has continued to be the most popular park in terms of visitation in the entire national park system (downtown Gatlinburg, Tennessee sits at the entrance), and has been the most visited park annually since 1940. If you are looking to visit there are many different hotels, bed and breakfast inns, cabin rentals to choose from in the immediate area.

The Smokey Mountains (see explanation of spellings for the Smokies) are the most ancient and oldest on earth - estimated to be 900 million years old. The original mountains were formed by the collision of Africa and North America that may have occurred 300 million years ago.

The Smoky Mountains were given their name because of the deep blue haze which can be seen from the mountains much of the time. The Cherokee Indians used to call the range "Shaconage" (pronounced Sha-KON-a-hey) which means the "place of the blue smoke". The appearance of blue smoke is actually created by water vapor rising from the thick forests which cover the mountains and valleys in the GSMNP.

So, come and enjoy the Park. Try to squeeze in as many attractions and adventures as you can in the brief vacation time you have. Come stay in our Pigeon Forge Cabins or Gatlinburg Cabins, hotels and B&Bs. You will love it! You will want to return (perhaps even retire in the area) and you will learn why these mountains are called the GREAT Smoky Mountains!
