Prior to the 1900's, this area of the Little River Valley was called Tuckaleechee Cove - meaning "peaceful valley" named by the Cherokees who lived here. For more than a century after the first settlements, Townsend remained a "peaceful valley," with farming along the valleys being the primary livelihood of the inhabitants. Since the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1940, Townsend has re-emerged as "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies".
