Swimming, diving or snorkeling with the giant stingrays has become an experience synonymous with Grand Cayman Island. The creatures have become semi-tame and shamelessly float around the swimmers who come to visit them, begging for food. Their eyes are on top of their body and their mouths are on the bottom, so they cannot see the food in your hand; they use their highly developed senses of smell and touch to detect food. Place the food on the palm of your hand and hold your hand perfectly flat; the stingray will glide over your hand and suck the food up into his mouth.
As you feed the ray, don't miss the experience of touching his skin; instead of the scaly surface you may expect, you will find a texture not unlike wet velvet. The rays do not actually sting; their only means of defense is a sharp barb on the end of their tail and someone would have to actually step on or severely mishandle a ray before being punctured by his barb.
Very few, if any snorkeling experiences in the world will ever exceed the thrill of swimming with the stingrays in Stingray City. Stingray City is not a shore- accessible snorkeling trip, but trips are available from any member of the Cayman National Watersports Association. Wherever else you snorkel on Grand Cayman, don't miss the excitement of this encounter.
WEST BAY CEMETERY
Drive west from Seven Mile Beach along West Bay Road. On the left after the Silver Sands and Drifters Cove Resorts you will see West Bay Cemetery and a narrow, sand-covered walkway with a sign marked "Public Access". There is pull-off parking on either side of the road at the cemetery and a small parking area across from the cemetery; any of these is a good location to park. !
Walk down the "Public Access" walkway and you will come out onto the beach. Enter the water and swim straight out and to the right. You will find a beautiful, shallow reef with plenty of fish, coral and the occasional turtle. This site is generally calm and an excellent location for a beginning snorkeler, but it is a lovely snorkel for anyone. The fish are quite tame and will swim right along with you, looking for handouts! Frozen peas, bread or squeeze-cheese are some of their favorite snacks.
This site has restrooms, but no other facilities. There is a nice beach with both shade and sun and the water along the shore is clear and lovely for those who just want to splash or play.
