The people of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians owe their history to the Baker Rolls of Cherokee Indians. One of the reasons why it is similar is because Qualla Boundary is the current homeland of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. As far as money matters are concerned they get most of their funds from the state and federal funds. Tourism also plays a major role in building up their funds. Another factor that plays a vital role in collecting funds is the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino; this casino was instituted in the early 1990’s. One has to know the fact that the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is completely different from the Cherokee Nation.
Cherokee Indian History: It is very important to know that the members of the Eastern Band have descended from the Cherokee who did not take part in the trail of tears. The trail of tears was a march that headed towards the Oklahoma Territory. Many historians of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are connected to the Cherokee and some of the members still practice the original ceremony.
Tsali was one personality who stayed back in the Cherokee homeland with a small number of other members. Together they had formed a rebellious group which rebelled against the United States, but eventually he was captured and executed by the United States. He has exchanged his life for the freedom of the small number of members who had taken part in the rebel.
Cherokee Indian Government: In 1827, the Cherokee tribe had formed a modern government and had also adopted a constitution. In 1865 the Cherokees were assured permanent residence by the State of North Carolina. The need to form a tribal government was held and hence a general council was held to form the tribal government. The tribal council played a vital role in the government. It consisted of Council Members which represented Painttown, Birdtown, Wolftown, Big Cove, Yellow Hill and Snowbird. Overall there are 12 council members who represent their respective towns.
Cherokeen Indian Language and Religion: The Cherokee Indian traditionalists think that a lot of traditional or religious practices of the Eastern Band were blending with the modern views and customs. This is all due to the cultural isolation that has taken place between the various factions of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Apart from this diversion that has taken place in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians customs and religion, there are some members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians that still practice the original dancing styles and function. The eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has started a program which will enforce all the people to learn the Cherokee language. In the Qualla boundary alone there are 900 speakers out of which 72 percent of the total are above 50 years of age.
